 How We Are Different

We treat in a community setting-

Most US acupuncturists treat patients on tables in individual cubicles. This is not traditional in Asia, where acupuncture usually occurs in a community setting. In our clinic, we primarily use several recliners clustered in small groups, in a quiet, soothing space. We practice primarily “distal” style acupuncture, meaning most of the needles are inserted below the elbows and knees. Treating patients in a community setting has many benefits: it’s easy for friends and family members to come in for treatment together; many patients find it comforting; and a collective energetic field becomes established which actually makes individual treatments more powerful. In some styles of acupuncture, the needles are removed after only a few minutes or after a half hour at most. The style of acupuncture we practice at SCA allows patients to keep their needles in as long as they want. The “right” amount of time varies from patient to patient. Most people learn after a few treatments when they feel “done”; this can take from twenty minutes to over an hour. Many people fall asleep and wake feeling refreshed.

We have a sliding scale -

Acupuncture needs to be consistent, not expensive, to be effective. Most US acupuncturists see only one patient per hour and charge $65 to $125 per treatment. The only way we at SCA can make acupuncture affordable and still make a living ourselves is to streamline our treatments and see multiple patients in an hour. So we have returned to the traditional approach: we rely on a shorter, concise consultation, along with pulse and tongue diagnosis to determine your treatment. This is the way acupuncture is practiced traditionally in Asia -- many patients per hour and very little talking.

Why this style of clinic?

We believe acupuncture should be accessible to everyone. We started this clinic in part out of inspiration from a clinic in Portland, Oregon called Working Class Acupuncture (WCA). The founders Lisa Rohleder, Skip Van Meter, and Lupine Hudson have shared their sustainable acupuncture practice model with those of us who want to make acupuncture more accessible to the general public. They have also organized the Community Acupuncture Network (CAN), a non-profit organization which seeks to promote the Community Acupuncture principles within the acupuncture profession. We extend our gratitude to those at WCA, and everyone else in the profession who so generously share their ideas and experiences in working toward a common goal -- affordable acupuncture, health, happiness and balance.
